Music producer’s wife files for divorce and alimony

Two individuals who once thought they were compatible may over the years realize they can no longer be together. When irreconcilable differences between parties arise, it may lead one of them to file for divorce. In fact, Michigan residents familiar with the music industry may find it interesting to learn that, according to recent reports, the wife of music producer, rapper and singer, Timbaland, has filed for divorce.

The 41-year-old and his soon to be ex-wife were married for five years. They have a 5-year-old daughter together. However, in divorce documents filed by Timbaland’s wife, among other things, she is seeking permanent alimony, life insurance, related cost of private schooling, summer camp expenses, vacation expenses and legal fees associated with the divorce proceedings. Furthermore, even though Timbaland is not the biological father of a 10-year-old child his wife had from a previous relationship, she is seeking child support payments for both the biological and non-biological child. His wife alleges that Timbaland, both in public and private, claimed the 10-year-old girl as his own.

Depending on the circumstances surrounding a couple, divorce proceedings can either be amicable or can get acrimonious. When it comes to issues, like as alimony, in Michigan, courts consider various factors, such as the duration of the marriage, age, health and the earning capacity of both parties. Additionally, whether alimony, also known as spousal support, is permanent or temporary depends if a spouse requesting it can be gainfully employed.

It is important to keep in mind that, even though a court has guidelines that it can follow for alimony amount determinations, alimony is generally negotiable, and it is best for the parties to work out a fair and equitable arrangement. For many divorcing individuals, the stress of divorce and multitude of issues involved in family law can be overwhelming. Thus, it may help those undergoing a divorce to understand their legal obligations and options, and to contact a family law attorney for more information.
