What is a collaborative divorce in Michigan?

When a marriage is headed toward dissolution, a couple may immediately conjure up images of many hours in a family courthouse with the parties battling for years over property, other assets and children. Just a thought of what is to come can be emotionally taxing and draining. Not to mention the thought of the cost associated with a divorce.

What you should know about finances, assets and divorce

In a divorce proceeding, many family law issues can surface which require resolution or some understanding between the parties undergoing the dissolution. In addition to issues that may involve child custody and child support, parties will have to deal with financial issues. A recent article listed some helpful tips to help ease issues surrounding assets and even debt for people thinking about filing for divorce or who are in the process of getting a divorce.

I am filing for divorce; how do I serve the papers?

When a person in Michigan has made the decision to file for a divorce, the paperwork must first be filed with the court, and then copies of those papers must be served on the other party. The other party must be personally served with the papers within 91 days. If the papers are not served in a timely manner, the file may be dismissed.

Is there a periodic review of child support orders in MI?

After a final judgment has been entered, a periodic review of a child support order will occur under certain circumstances and if financial circumstances of the parties have changed. In Michigan, the review is conducted by the friend of the court office.
