Sarah Palin's sister-in-law files for divorce

Most people are well aware of the statistic that approximately 50 percent of all marriages end in divorce. The reasons for ending one's marriage will vary from person to person and, depending on one's situation, issues such as child custody, child support, visitation, property division, alimony and more may dominate the family law and divorce proceedings.

Michigan residents familiar with former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin may find it interesting to learn that recently, Palin's sister-in-law separated from her husband after a 12-year marriage. The couple is in the middle of resolving a custody battle over their 10-year-old daughter. Further, about a month or so before the announcement of this separation, Sarah Palin's son filed for divorce after less than two years of marriage.

Palin's son and his ex-spouse have agreed on how to divide their property and have agreed to a custody arrangement of their 1-year old daughter. Palin's son will retain his gun collection and a $30K bank account, while his ex will be able to keep her jewelry and a $2,500 bank account.

Separation and divorce is a difficult and emotional matter. Everyone has their own way of dealing with divorce, but it is not an easy process. In the case of the Palins, at least Palin's son and his ex-wife were able to agree on the property division of their assets and custody of their child. It is unclear of what Palin's sister-in-law's custody dispute will yield. Either way, issues of property division, child custody and the like are not uncommon legal issues, which arise during any divorce proceeding.

Families in the process of divorce and facing similar issues may find it helpful to seek the expert advice of legal counsel to ensure that they are not being taken advantage of and that a fair and equitable option is on the table for both sides. Divorce is not easy, but by working together, often times, both sides can come up with an agreeable and affordable solution.
